Report: Ex-USWNT manager Jill Ellis on list to fill DC United coaching vacancy

Jill Ellis, the former manager of the US National Women’s Team, is reportedly one of the candidates being considered to fill the recently vacated coaching position with DC United. According to Pablo Maurer of The Athletic, Ellis’s name is on DC United’s list along with former Real Salt Lake manager Jason Kreis and former Schalke 04 manager David Wagner.

Ben Olsen, who managed DC United for ten years, was fired last week.

Ellis would be the first woman to manage an MLS team, and she certainly has the bona fides to do it. Her five-year run at the helm of the stacked USWNT was brilliant. The team won two World Cup titles during her tenure, and she became just the second coach ever to win consecutive World Cups. She has a record of 106-7-19, including her stint as interim USWNT manager in 2012.

Ellis stepped down as USWNT manager in July 2019, less than a month after winning the 2019 Women’s World Cup.

Managing DC United wouldn’t be an easy job. Unlike the USWNT teams she coached, DC United is not very good right now. Their 2-10 record isn’t just the worst in the Eastern Conference, it’s the worst in all of MLS. Given that, it’s unknown if Ellis would have any interest in managing DC United. Since she stepped down from the USWNT she’s been working with the US Soccer Federation to increase the number of women coaches.
