Aussie woman gives birth to 6kg ‘sumo wrestler’ baby

A mum has dubbed her child a ‘mini Sumo wrestler’ after she was born weighing an eye-watering 5.88kg or 12.9lbs.

Remi Frances Millar shocked her family when she got on the scales, and her birth weight was even more surprising considering she wasn’t even born full term.

Mum Emma Millar and dad Daniel, from Sydney, had an idea that their baby could be on the larger side, as Emma had already given birth to daughter Willow, two, and son Ace, four, who weighed 5.5kg and 3.8kg respectively.

But they didn’t imagine that Remi would be delivered weighing almost twice the amount of an average baby girl at just 38 weeks and two days.

The average weight for a baby born in Australia is 3.35kg.

Speaking about her shock delivery, Emma, who needed an emergency caesarean told the Illawarra Mercury: “She’s like a mini sumo wrestler. I did expect to have a larger baby as I had gestational diabetes but not this big.

“At 35 weeks an ultrasound revealed she was about 4kg (8.8lbs) but we didn’t think she’d grow that much more.”

Dad Daniel said that Remi became quite the little celebrity at the hospital she was born at thanks to her unusual weight.

Remi was so big the clothes her parents had bought for her didn’t fit, forcing them to buy new ones.

Daniel added that when he takes the newborn out, people can't help but stop and ask questions.

"When I've walked around with her there's always a crowd of people - midwives, other new parents and visitors - around her, asking about her size because she's so much bigger than all the other newborns," he told the publication.

Despite being larger than average newborns, Remi is a fair way off the largest baby ever born who weighed a whopping 10.2 kg (22.5lb) when he was delivered in Italy in 1955.
