Relaxed SoCal Style Meets French Country Elegance in This $6 Million Pasadena Home
The great thing about this eye-catching home in Pasadena, about 10 miles from downtown L.A., is that it integrates two design styles into one.
Crafted to perfection by House of Rolison, the celebrated design duo turned the mansard-roofed home hidden away at the end of a long, gated driveway at 1484 Rutherford Drive into an on-trend retreat that combines a quintessentially relaxed SoCal vibe with the elegance of a French Country estate. Amanda Leigh and Taylor Hahn, the founders and principals of the Los Angeles-based development firm, have now hoisted the newly revamped pad onto the market for a speck under $6 million with The Agency’s Farrah Brittany.

Records show the designers doled out a cool $2.7 million in October 2023 for the circa-1988 abode, which marks their first project in the City of Roses. Altogether, the tree-shielded residence sports six bedrooms and five full bathrooms across just over 6,000 square feet. The home feels grand upon entering thanks to a soaring 20-foot ceiling capped by a massive skylight that pours natural light into the foyer and living room, while a floating staircase winds up to a striking bridge that runs between the two wings on the upper level.

The sunken living room’s double-height volume was partly subdued with curvaceous, low-slung furnishings covered in super-cozy fabrics along with an abundance of natural materials, including custom-stained cedar paneling on the ceiling. Arched French doors on either side of a floor-to-ceiling fireplace open onto an entertainment terrace. Nearby, a sleek bar area showcases red oak cabinets, an antique brass sink, and leathered black countertops. Giving the otherwise understated chef’s kitchen a visual jolt are swaths of dramatic Calacatta Viola marble on the counters and backsplashes, which is something of a hallmark of a home by the House of Rolison. At one end of the two islands at the center of the kitchen, a niche is lined with a built-in banquette for casual meals.
The sprawling primary suite rounds out the first floor and takes up almost an entire wing of the house with its stately restored brick fireplace in the bedroom, expansive walk-in closet with floor-to-ceiling storage and ensuite bath. The latter carries the same charm and high-end appeal as the kitchen, complete with more Calacatta Viola marble, plus handmade Moroccan zellige tiles, and designer lighting. Highlights of the upper floor include two dens and a swanky sauna room.
Naturally, the outdoor areas were overhauled, too, and are now equipped with irrigated garden beds, a state-of-the-art alfresco kitchen, and a heated swimming pool and spa with a pretty views of the San Gabriel Mountains.
