Publicist and longtime family friend Ernest Dukes confirmed the tragic news in a statement.

"Today the Leakes family is in deep pain with a broken heart. After a long battle with cancer, Gregg Leakes has passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by all of his children, very close loved ones and wife Nene Leakes," he said.

"We ask that you pray for peace and strength over their family & allow them to mourn in private during this very very difficult time."

Gregg was first diagnosed with Stage III colon cancer in 2018 but had been in remission for two years, People magazine reports.

The in June, NeNe revealed he was hospitalised and recovering from surgery following the return of his cancer.

The pair got married in 1997, divorced in 2011 before remarrying in June 2013. They share one son together, Brentt Leakes, 22.

Viewers saw the fallout of the illness and the impact it had on their marriage during the 11th season of Real Housewives of Atlanta, with NeNe even admitting she had considered divorce for a second time.

However, Gregg publicly apologised to his wife on Instagram after that, saying he took her for granted.

"We always hurt the ones we love … because they allow us to hurt them rather than snap back," he wrote.

"I'm tired of hurting my wife who is only trying to take good care of me and wants only the best for me too."
