Kelly Marie Tran Comes Out At 35
If you somehow aren't aware, this is Kelly Marie Tran. She's been in the Star Wars movies The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker. She also voiced the titular character in Raya and the Last Dragon.
Well, she just publicly came out as queer!!!
Kelly made the revelation yesterday while discussing her role in the upcoming remake of The Wedding Banquet.
"I haven’t said this publicly yet, but I’m a queer person,” Kelly told Vanity Fair, reportedly getting emotional.
Kelly said her identity as a queer person is also why she was initially attracted to the role. "The thing that really excited me about it was I got to play a person that I felt like I knew," she shared. "I don't feel like I'm acting at all in this movie."
She added, "I’m here doing this amazing movie with these amazing people. I’ve never been in a queer space before. I’ve never truly felt this accepted before."
People were so happy for her! And celebrated her online.
Kelly has also advocated for LGBTQ+ characters in Hollywood before. In fact, she even said she thinks there were "some romantic feelings going on" between Raya and her enemy Namaari in Raya and the Last Dragon.
"I think if you’re a person watching this movie and you see representation in a way that feels really real and authentic to you, then it is real and authentic," she added to Vanity Fair while discussing speculation that Raya might be queer. "I think it might get me in trouble for saying that, but whatever."
