"I Would Rather Get Arrested": Chappell Roan Revealed The "Scary" Hollywood Job She Won't Do
Chappell Roan's career is moving at lightning speed.
The singer's 2023 album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, and more recent single, "Good Luck, Babe!" have found major success on the music charts this summer.
As of Aug. 19, the album is No. 3 on the Billboard 200, while "Good Luck, Babe!" is No. 7 on the Hot 100.
Her live shows at music festivals like Boston Calling and Gov Ball have also garnered major crowds. In fact, a Lollapalooza spokesperson told CNN that her Aug. 1 performance at the Chicago festival was "the biggest daytime set [they've] ever seen."
All this musical success has spurred many opportunities for the singer. However, she recently made it clear that she isn't saying yes to everything that comes her way, including one notable career possibility in Hollywood.
In a conversation with Saturday Night Live's Bowen Yang for Interview Mag published Monday, Chappell revealed that she has no interest in acting.
"I say this with peace, and love, and blessings. Actors are fucking crazy," she told Bowen, who'd asked if she'd take up the profession. She added that she gets "so freaked out by film people" and has recently been asked if she'd want to "lead" in various acting projects.
"I appreciate it, but literally, no," she said, noting that she initially took up music as a pathway to get into acting. However, after moving to Los Angeles, the singer realized the career wasn't for her, calling the industry "legitimately so scary" and "so out of [her] control."
Conversely, Chappell said she can "put out music whenever" she wants to and isn't beholden to waiting to be cast. Still, Chappell would "maybe" be open to doing a cameo in the right project. "I think it would have to be really specific and really silly," she said.
"I've been trained how to act, but it's the most stressful thing in the world to me. I would rather get arrested," she added.
Acting isn't the only thing the singer has turned down. Elsewhere in the interview, she shot down the idea of capitalizing off her rising fame by taking on just any brand deal.
"My career has worked because I've done it my way, and I've not compromised morals and time. I have not succumbed to the pressure," she said. "Like, 'Bitch! I’m not doing a brand deal if it doesn’t feel right. I don’t care how much you’re paying me.' That’s why I can sleep at night."
