Rams coach Sean McVay 'skeptical' NFL season will start as scheduled

Head coach Sean McVay has to plan on the NFL season going on as laid out on the schedule. His Los Angeles Rams are reporting to training camp soon. He needs to be ready.

But he doubts that it’s going to happen on time.

McVay has been one of the few voices among NFL management and coaches to join players in wondering how the NFL season will happen on time considering the safety issues still unanswered amid the coronavirus pandemic. He continued to express that concern, days before the Rams report.

Sean McVay: ‘Maybe there’s a chance that things get moved back’

In an interview with The Helliepod Podcast with Dan Hellie of NFL Network, McVay was skeptical about the season happening on time.

“Something about it tells me maybe there’s a chance that things get moved back,” McVay said, via Rams Wire. “And that’s what’s weird, because you want to make sure — hey, if we’re going, we’re ready to roll, we’re locked in.”

McVay has expressed concern about playing football during the pandemic, considering you can’t block and tackle with social distancing. McVay told Hellie that there will be a season, just that it could be pushed back.

“What I’ve been telling our people is, ‘Hey, we’re going to have a great plan, whether we get a chance to execute that plan now or a little bit later remains to be seen,’” McVay said. “But I am confident we will have a season, we’ll be able to play football. Whether or not it goes exactly on the schedule that we’ve all seen, that’s something that I’m a little skeptical of right now.”

NFL faces obstacles

Players have expressed concerns about the NFL’s plan for safety and health measures. The league, as of Monday morning, had refused to cancel the entire preseason. Perhaps that could lead to a delay in the start of camps. If camps are delayed, players still will need time to get ready for the regular season and that could affect Week 1. The first regular-season game is scheduled for Sept. 10.

While the NFL has continued to maintain that its season will happen on time, plenty of obstacles still remain. McVay isn’t the first person to express skepticism. It’s just that not many of the doubts are coming from people in the league other than the players.
