Queen Letizia and King Felipe's Glamorous New Portraits Have a Sweet Hidden Meaning
The Spanish royals celebrated their 20th anniversary with photos lensed by Annie Leibovitz.
Queen Letizia and King Felipe are celebrating their 20th anniversary with a pair of very special glamour shots, lensed by famed (and longtime royals) photographer Annie Leibovitz. On November 26, the Spanish monarchs debuted new portraits that perfectly complement each other and also contain a hidden meaning.
In Letizia's portrait, the Spanish queen poses in Gasparini Hall of the Royal Palace wearing a 70-year-old stunning black strapless gown with ruched detailing and a full fit-and-flare skirt, designed by Spanish designer, and founder of Balenciaga, Cristóbal Balenciaga. A red taffeta cape rested on the royal's arms and wrapped around the skirt of the dress.
The queen's jewels in the photo have been in the Spanish royal family for generations, according to the Court Jeweller. Letizia's diamond earrings and diamond necklace are a part of the the joyas de pasar collection, which was curated by King Felipe’s great-grandmother, Queen Ena. The queen's dark brown hair is styled in shiny waves and a deep side part, and her glam includes a smokey eye and a mauve lip.
The portrait of King Felipe captured the monarch posing against a table in his traditional military uniform, complete with a blue sash, red belt, and medals.
While the portraits may appear as separate images, when hung side-by-side, the photos perfectly fit together. “The two portraits make a diptych so that they match perfectly when hung together," Hello! reports.
Earlier this year, the king and queen celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary on May 22. According to People, the then-prince and the former news anchor tied to knot in 2004 at Almudena Cathedral in Madrid.
Leibovitz captured two portraits of British royal Queen Elizabeth II in 2007 and 2016. The second photo was taken for the late queen's 90th birthday and captured her and her family, including her great-grandchildren.
