There’s no doubt about the power of the ‘Kate effect’ when it comes to the Princess of Wales’ wardrobe – outfits worn by the Duchess of Cambridge and Cornwall sell out in hours, if not minutes – and one of her go-to designers has chimed in on why he thinks that’s the case.
One of Kate’s go-to designers for evening and red carpet events, Roland Mouret, has spoken out about what makes the Princess of Wales so important as a member of the Royal Family.
“She represents the way a woman grows,” Mouret, 61, told The Sunday Times over the weekend, “the way a woman stands not behind but beside.”
Kate, 40, most recently chose one of the London-based French designer’s gowns for the Top Gun: Maverick royal premiere in May earlier this year.
The mother-of-three wore a sleek black and white gown with a bardot-style top which highlighted her toned figure in one of her most daring looks yet.
The Princess of Wales walked the London red carpet with her husband, Prince William, and the star of the film, Hollywood actor Tom Cruise, but Kate’s stunning and sophisticated £2,700 Mouret look undoubtedly stole the show.
“That sense of equality she has created — she's powerful,” continued Mouret, adding that that “sense of equality” she’s created is evident in hers' and the Prince of Wales' relationship.
That power, he says, is what he brought with him when designing his for Spring 2023, referring to one orange-coloured short-sleeve dress from the collection as “the Kate dress.”
Mouret, who is known for his seductive form-hugging numbers, added that he is proud “to be able to do things that can help her” and do his part in “protecting her”.
“To make things that she feels protected in at that moment when the world is looking at her, I've done a little part in protecting her,” he told the publication.
The Roland Mouret brand sadly went into administration in November 2021, and sadly had to abruptly let go 80 of its employees after it struggled to bounce back from the dent the COVID-19 pandemic had made, like many other businesses.
However, Mouret seems eternally optimistic, and hopes to recreate the buzz of his signature ‘Galaxy’ dress, the figure-hugging hit from the early Noughties that was seen on almost every celebrity from Victoria Beckham to Kate Hudson, with the help of Chinese entrepreneur and designer Han Chong, who saved the company from administration.
