Princess Mary unveils traditional Christmas tree at Amalienborg Palace

Christmas cheer is in full swing at Amalienborg Palace, if this picture shared on the Danish royal family’s official Instagram account is anything to go by.

In a picture taken by Crown Princess Mary, a festively decorated Christmas tree can be seen in the royal’s residence.

The large tree nearly reaches the ceiling of the palace and it is covered in different coloured baubles.

However, the Danish royal family appear to have ditched the fairy lights for the more traditional placement of candles on branches.

The candles are usually only lit on Christmas eve when the family are all together after dinner.

“Christmas party in the Knights Hall in Frederik VII’s Palace, Amalienborg, here on the third Sunday in advent,” the caption wrote.

Meanwhile, the British Royal Family recently gave the world a look at staff preparing the three towering Christmas trees in the Marble Hall near the Grand Entrance.

The trees, grown in Windsor, have been covered with hundreds of white lights and decorated in “royal story” with Royal Collection Christmas decorations of miniature red velvet and gold crowns and embroidered state coaches.

Multi-coloured baubles and red velvet bows also adorn the festive garland along the length of the grand staircase.

The decorations are ready for the royal family to enjoy when they join the Queen for a pre-Christmas lunch ahead of December 25, as is usually the custom before she heads to Sandringham.

Queen Charlotte, consort of George III, is thought to have introduced the Christmas tree to the Royal Family.

The later enthusiasm of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert for the custom helped spread the popularity throughout the country.
