Princess Beatrice Once Got a 7-Bedroom Mansion For Her 9th Birthday
But she had to give it back.
I'd imagine there's several perks that come with having the Queen of England as your grandmother. But Princess Beatrice's 9th birthday present from Queen Elizabeth exceeded all of our expectations—even for a royal grandma.
Elizabeth was often generous with Beatrice, lending her a very special wedding tiara for the princess's own big day and even playing a part in naming her daughter. When Beatrice turned 9, however, Elizabeth significantly raised her own bar with an extremely lavish gift. According to The Sun, on Beatrice's 9th birthday, the queen gave Birch Hall, a Grade II-listed estate in the village of Windlesham in Surrey, to Beatrice and her sister, Princess Eugenie.
At the time, the seven-bedroom mansion was worth about $1.9 million (in U.S. dollars) and its value has grown even more since. In 2016, the house sold for $6.1 million, per AOL. In addition to seven bedrooms, the residence contains four bathrooms, a heated pool, a tennis court, and an on-property cottage for staff.
Unfortunately, Ferguson thought the gift was a bit too much and made her daughters return the gesture. The outlet also notes that she raised a good point in that the house would cost more in upkeep than a 9-year-old could afford. The queen reportedly sold the property and opened a trust for her granddaughters using the money from the sale.
When Elizabeth died in September 2022, Beatrice and Eugenie penned a sweet tribute honoring their "Grannie."
"You were our matriarch, our guide, our loving hand on our backs leading us through this world. You taught us so much and we will cherish those lessons and memories forever," they wrote in a letter at the time. "For now dear Grannie, all we want to say is thank you. Thank you for making us laugh, for including us, for picking heather and raspberries, for marching soldiers, for our teas, for comfort, for joy. You, being you, will never know the impact you have had on our family and so many people around the world."
