Princess Beatrice announced her engagement to fiancé Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi.

The Queen’s granddaughter, who’s ninth-in-line to the throne, celebrated her news with a series of photographs including a close-up of her engagement ring, but it’s the price tag and designer, rather than the cut, that has people talking.

The man behind the ring is none other than her fiancé, who designed the ring and spared no cost on it.

The 31-year-old’s brilliant-cut, shoulder-set diamond ring is a fairly modern design - and though the jeweller has not revealed the cost of the piece, London jeweller Susannah Lovis has estimated it reaches the six-figure region.

“Princess Beatrice’s is a beautiful engagement ring with a round brilliant cut diamond flanked by four baguette-cut diamonds,” she says.

“It is breath-taking particularly because all you can see is diamonds and the platinum band is hidden. It appears to be around 3.5 carats and would probably have cost in the region of $180,000.”

Hatton Garden jeweller makes a similar cost estimate at between $150,000 and $180,000.

“Princess Beatrice engagement ring is a beautiful Art-Deco inspired piece,” a representative told Yahoo.

“The style is classic as (Edoardo) obviously tried to stay traditional but with a modern twist. (Edoardo’s) choice of jeweller reflects this,” they added. “We love the ring and estimate its value at between $150,000 and $180,000.”

The opulent ring and dress has already courted some controversy, with the pair accused of upstaging Prince Harry and Meghan Markle with her news, as the Sussexes are currently on an official tour of South Africa.

A personal affair

A world apart from the pink, vintage-inspired sapphire ring that Jack Brooksbank gave then-fiancée Princess Eugenie back in 2017, Beatrice’s ring is a personal affair designed by fiancé Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi.

The 36-year-old designed the piece in collaboration with the British jewellery designer Shaun Leane, according to an Instagram post on the Duke of York’s official account.

The platinum and diamond engagement ring is a fusion of Victorian and Art Deco designs, according to a statement from Shaun Leane. It is accompanied by two additional matching bands in the jeweller’s distinctive hand.

“The bespoke experience began with a detailed and personal consultation with the groom. Consequently, the design is filled with personal and sentimental signifiers for the couple and unique to them,” a statement says.

“I am so honoured Edoardo chose to work with me to design the engagement ring for Princess Beatrice and to have been involved in this special moment in their lives,” designer Shaun Leane said of the design.

“The bespoke experience was a beautiful journey; from imagining the design with Edoardo to the crafting of the finished rings. Being able to incorporate both Edoardo and Princess Beatrice’s characters into the design has resulted in a unique ring that represents their love and lives entwining,” he added.

Prices start from $9000

While Beatrice’s ring is a bespoke piece, prices for a Shaun Leane engagement ring start at $9,500 on the jeweller’s website.

Shaun Leane has proved popular among the royals in recent years.

The Duchess of Sussex has previously worn earrings by Shaun Leane when she went to watch Hamilton in London in August last year.

Similarly, the Duchess of Cambridge wore an Asprey woodland charm necklace designed in collaboration with Shaune Lean in 2014.

The jeweller also has a strong celebrity following.

Taylor Swift wore Shaun Leane earrings in her music video for ‘Look What You Made Me Do’, while Björk, Daphne Guinness, Sam Taylor-Johnson, Elton John, Emma Watson are also among previous clients.
