The moment that shows what Meghan Markle is doing wrong

A fan’s royal selfie has sparked a raised eyebrow or two after it was compared to the now-infamous Wimbledon selfie scandal Meghan Markle found herself at the centre of earlier this year.

Over the weekend, a fan found himself seated beside Wills, Kate and their royal offspring at the soccer Premier League match between Norwich City and Aston Villa and decided to sneak a snap of his royal neighbours, receiving a very different reaction to the hapless fan who kicked off Wimbledon selfie-gate.

That is, he received no reaction at all.

The adorable snap was shared to Twitter on October 6th by the beaming fan in the photo and shows Prince George giving the camera his best deadpan, while Kate, Wills and Charlotte seem to hardly notice he is there.

Snapped in the royal box, the family are surrounded by other soccer fans, and with no uniformed security guard in site could easily be mistaken for an average clan enjoying the match.

The tweet attracted a flurry of comments, all praising the down-to-earth royals and some making a pointed comparison to Meghan’s similar run-in with a fan which went very differently.

“Good to see some royal members aren't drama queens,” one woman wrote.

“See. That's how low-key and normal Meghan and Harry should be,” another pointed out.

“A lovely normal couple who trust the British people,” was another’s pointed takeaway.

An awkward comparison

Meghan Markle sparked backlash earlier in the year when it was reported that security guards told a selfie-taking fan not to photograph her during a very public Wimbledon match.

58-year-old grandad, Hasan Hasanov, was at the centre of the viral moment after a photo appeared showing him taking a selfie in the VIP stand in front of Meghan Markle, before being reprimanded by her security detail.

Ironically a quick zoom shows the spectator was, in fact, snapping a selfie with tennis champ Serena Williams.

He later claimed he had no idea the Duchess of Sussex was even there and said he was left confused when one of the 37-year-old’s minders told him off and asked him to give the former Suits actress privacy.

Wills and Kate barely bat an eye

Judging by the Twitter commentary, the bearded fan who was actually guilty of a selfie with sport-watching royals met with no such backlash, and presumably sat back down and carried on watching the match.

The photo comes after the Sussexes announced they would be taking on The Mail on Sunday over the publication of a letter written by Meghan to her father, and after their successful African tour.

Harry and Meghan’s approach has long been compared to that of William and Kate, who are far more open with the public, though as commentators point out, the future king has a greater duty to interact with the public he will one day reign over.

Points of contention include Harry and Meghan’s decision to delay the release of images of son Archie, while Kate and Wills always allow the traditional photo on the hospital steps.

Archie’s godparents have also been kept a secret, unlike the godparents of the Cambridges’ offspring, and after the pair courted controversy over their use of a friend’s private jet, Kate and Wills were spotted flying commercial.

The couple seems dogged with controversy, which is only exacerbated by the Cambridges’ seemingly effortless balance of private and public lives.

Though a selfie scandal is a thoroughly modern dilemma, at the heart of it, it’s a royal tale as old as time.

November 17, old dramas resurface in The Crown’s third season

The Crown returns for its highly anticipated third season on November 17, 2019, and may just remind royal watchers that scandal has always been synonymous with Britain’s most famous family.

While Meghan’s selfie sanctions may have some clutching at their pearls, the upcoming season will explore the turbulent years of the ’60s and ’70s and may give watchers a reminder of the controversy that the family has always courted.

Season four will ramp it up even further, with shots captured from the set confirming the season will follow the Charles and Diana years, which of curse culminated in their divorce after 15 years of marriage.
