Prince George Is Already Taking Flying Lessons
He's *checks notes* 11.
While most 11-year-olds are tackling things like algebra and geometry, Prince George isn't like other 11-year-olds. Today, the son of Prince William and Princess Catherine had his first flying lesson—and he became the youngest member of the royal family, ever, to kick-start his career in the sky. On what was the very last day of his summer break, George was seen at White Waltham Airfield near Maidenhead, Berkshire, taking a flying lesson as his proud parents looked on from the nearby clubhouse.
A witness told the Mirror of the moment, "He loved it. It’s the right time to start. The royal family has a proud tradition of flying and it looks like George is next in line. His parents watched George take flight from the safety of the ground but he flew with an instructor and loved it."
According to The Sun, Prince Philip also trained at White Waltham, starting his lessons back in November 1952 at age 31. William and his brother, Prince Harry, also have experience with piloting, but both started training when they enlisted in the military. William started at age 27, when he started an intensive training program with the Royal Air Force. Harry had similar training and went on to become a gunner during a tour of Afghanistan. King Charles was also a member of the RAF, as was Prince Andrew, who flew helicopters in the Falklands War. With that sort of pedigree, it seems that George is on his way to joining the ranks of his family members.
Another onlooker added that "there were probably 30 or 40 people in the clubhouse. Catherine and William watched George take off. But they were relaxed about it. All three of them had been pretty chilled in the clubhouse."
Earlier this week, during a visit to the Wales Air Ambulance headquarters in Llanelli, Wiliam expressed an interest in returning to the air, saying, “I’d love to fly again, I could volunteer for a weekend to make a comeback.”
