Prince Charles launches 'The Amal Clooney' award

Amal Clooney has been announced as the figurehead of a new initiative for the Prince of Wales’ charity The Prince’s Trust International.

The Lebanese-British human rights lawyer, 41, has put her name to the The Amal Clooney Award, which will highlight the work of young women who have succeeded against the odds to make a lasting difference in their communities.

The mum-of-two will personally select one young winner to be presented with the award a year from now, in 2020.

“I am honoured to have been invited by Prince’s Trust International to participate in this global initiative celebrating young women who are change-makers in their communities,” Amal said after the announcement.

“It is a privilege to be able to play a part in a project that will draw attention to incredible young women who are the future leaders of our world.”

Amal and husband George sparked rumours of a collaboration with Prince Charles, when they attended a dinner at Buckingham Palace in aid of his charity last week.

According to Mail Online, the heir to the throne is said to find Amal “deeply impressive,” and it’s no wonder why.

Qualified to practise as a lawyer in the US and the UK, Amal was admitted to the bar in England and Wales in 2010.

As a barrister, who specialises in public international law, criminal law and human rights, she’s ranked as one of the top lawyers in the country in her field.

Mrs Clooney previously served as a senior advisor to Kofi Annan, when he was the UN’s Envoy on Syria and she has worked on a number of high profile cases, including representing a Yazidi woman, Nadia Murad, who was kidnapped and held by the Islamic State for three months.

She’s a huge advocate for women’s rights. She established the Amal Clooney Scholarship in 2015, which was created to send one female student from Lebanon to the United World College Dilijan each year, to enrol in a two-year International Baccalaureate (IB) programme.

Together with husband George, Amal also set up the Clooney Foundation for Justice in 2016 to with the aim of “fighting for the rights of individuals unfairly targeted by oppressive governments through the courts.”

Having a high profile individual like Mrs Clooney on a charity, not only garners media coverage, but it’s also the latest step by the Royal Family and their focus on female empowerment.

The Duchess of Sussex recently joined an International Women’s Day panel and the Countess of Wessex championed gender equality at the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) at the United Nations.
