Prince Charles had ‘14 years of therapy’ over Diana

A new bombshell biography looking into the secrets of Prince Charles and Diana’s marriage has revealed the depths of their unhappiness, detailing how the royal underwent years of therapy to deal with his relationship.

Author Sally Bedell Smith claims Prince Charles was left at his wits end shortly after marrying Diana.

The royal struggled with Diana’s emotional outbursts which ranged from “suffering from insomnia… growing thinner by the day [and] berating her new husband about his former mistress [Camilla Parker Bowles],” Sally explains to the Daily Mail.

Frustrated and with nowhere to turn, he enlisted the help of Dr Alan McGlashan, a psychologist who was recommended to him by an old friend.

But while Diana only saw Dr McGlashan eight times, Prince Charles went on to seek treatment for the next 14 years, ending his sessions in the mid-90s.

Sally goes on to shed new light on Prince Charles’ role in the marriage, claiming “McGlashan perceived him as ‘misunderstood and starved’ of ‘really spontaneous, natural affection’, and provided the Prince with ‘the respect his own natural spirit deserves’.”

In her new book 'Prince Charles: The Passions And Paradoxes Of An Improbable Life', Sally explains how Diana’s struggle with bulimia, depression, anxiety and fears of abandonment saw Charles sympathetic, but “lacking the knowledge or the temperament” to help his wife.

“Instead, the Prince and household advisers and staff dealt with Diana’s bewildering and often infuriating behaviour by placating her and trying to distract her,” explains Sally.

“And, ultimately, out of frustration, they abandoned her”

These aren’t the only explosive claims to come out of the new book, with Sally touching on the sex appeal that saw Charles irresistibly drawn to Camilla.

English socialite Lady Annabel Goldsmith is described as labeling Camilla “an intensely warm maternal laughing creature, with enormous sex appeal”.

It's an opinion backed up by one of Camilla's earliest love interests, Kevin Burke.

"She was terrific fun, immensely popular, and although she wasn’t a beauty... she was attractive and sexy," Kevin told the Mail. "She was never tongue-tied or shy, she always had something amusing to say."
