Favourite Kitchen Gadgets

We asked: What's your favourite kitchen gadget?

My Délonghi coffee maker

It might seem odd for a nutritionist to love coffee, but I do! No matter what mud they sling at this brew, research usually comes out in favour of drinking it. This coffee maker is the best I’ve owned; it grinds the beans fresh each time, it’s all automatic and there’s no mess. (DéLonghi, $3,099; 1800 126 659)

My handheld blender

This recent purchase has already earned its stripes in my kitchen. Now I can swiftly whip up my favourite roast-eggplant dip, make a great cranberry-and-lime fish glaze from nutritionist Judy Davie and try some other smooth moves. (Cuisinart, $79.95; 1800 808 971)

My Microplane grater

Who knew a humble grater could change your life? Microplane says ‘expect a miracle’ and delivers one. My parmesan is now as light as fairy floss, and I can zest a lime blindfolded. After my mother-in-law tried ours, she bought three! The secret to its razorlike edges is a process called photo-etching: a chemical rather than a machine cuts the holes. Miraculous! (Microplane, $49; 02-8884 6000)

My salad spinner

I’m impatient in the kitchen, and I don’t enjoy spending much time there. So I was delighted when a friend gave me a salad spinner—I can’t imagine what I did without it. Washing salad is now simple and quick, freeing me up for other, more exciting, activities. (Zyliss, $69; 02-8884 6000)

Stovetop coffee maker

I love cooking, and I love the kitchen, so it’s hard to select just one favourite item, but, if I had to choose, I’d probably say my stovetop coffee maker. I used to have a fancier machine, but I’ve gone back to basics; these simple, traditional espresso machines make excellent coffee. And I love the ceremony associated with packing the coffee, waiting for it to boil, gently heating the milk and ensuring the mix is just right for a thoroughly enjoyable caffeine injection! (Euroline, $69; 02-8884 6000)

My Italian benchtop pizza oven

It has two coils that heat up and a pizza stone that makes the best pizza. I make the dough from scratch with my kids—they love getting their hands mucky. (Breville, $139.95; 1300 139 798)

My KitchenAid mixer

I bake a lot of cakes and biscuits for the kids. After using a cheap little handheld mixer, I recently got a pink KitchenAid. I've looked at these many times in the shops and marvelled at their power—and cute colour. Living in a household of boys and blokey things, I see my pink KitchenAid as very special!
