Pregnant woman's baby 'cut out by friend' at fake baby shower

A woman who was 36 weeks pregnant was allegedly lured to a fake baby shower and murdered by a “friend” who had plotted to steal her baby.

Brazilian woman Flávia Godinho Mafra’s body was found on August 28 by her husband.

The 24-year-old’s stomach had been cut open and her baby was gone.

She had gone missing a day earlier following a fake baby shower last Thursday.

Ms Mafra was a substitute teacher, however, Brazilian news site, NSC Total reported she had not worked recently due to the coronavirus pandemic, as she was pregnant and had diabetes.

She has been described as popular and hardworking, she had married her husband last October and lived in Santa Catarina, in Brazil’s south.

The woman who threw the “baby shower” for Ms Mafra, along with her partner, has since been arrested and according to news site has confessed to police.

Two of Ms Marfa’s friends were also invited, however, they were told the event was cancelled, whereas Ms Mafra was not, and her family became concerned when she did not return home.

The female friend who hosted the fake shower has not been named, but according to NSC Total, she kept in touch with the family, saying Ms Mafra had left with someone else.

The friend had reportedly also made a plea on social media, just hours before the expectant mother’s body was found, asking for help with the search.

The victim was allegedly hit in the head with a brick and after the crime was committed, the offender took the child to a hospital, though staff became suspicious as she showed no signs of having recently given birth.

The baby girl was taken to a children’s hospital and had cuts on her body, however it has been reported she is now fine.

The woman reportedly had an abortion in January this year, yet continued to tell everyone she was pregnant, local media website Diario Costa Esmeralda reported, including her 44-year-old companion.

“In all my years of work, I have never seen anything like it,” delegate from Tijucas, Paulo Alexandre Freyesleben e Silva said according to the news site.

“She is extremely cold. She neither cared about the child's health nor asked. She told the crime in detail. There was no feeling, she spoke normally.”
