Pregnant bride storms out after inappropriate question

Weddings have a funny way of making tensions run high, even amongst the closest of friends and family units.

But throw in a disapproving mother, judgemental peers and an unexpected pregnancy, and things are sure to get heated.

The above was the case for soon to be married Tori, who is appearing on Channel Seven’s Bride and Prejudice alongside five other Aussie couples whose families have threatened to boycott their weddings.

Tori and the other brides and grooms sat down together for a dinner party on Sunday night and were asked to submit anonymous questions for each other to answer, but when it came time for Tori to respond, she was read a question she found deeply inappropriate; ‘Why are you drinking while pregnant?’

Tori had only recently discovered she was five weeks pregnant and was already feeling uneasy about sharing the news with the group so early on, not least because the chance of miscarriage is high in the first three months.

She and her fiance James had already been to one scan where the sonographer had been unable to see the embryo or hear a heartbeat.

“Wow,” was Tori’s response to the question, before she immediately turned and accused one of the fellow brides at the table, Dannii, of having asked it.

Indignant, Dannii stormed out and slammed the door behind her, and Tori left soon afterwards saying, “I’m going to bed for the night because I really don’t want to deal with this sh*t anymore.”

She could be heard crying in her hotel room and James explained to cameras that she “felt extremely uncomfortable with questions that were aired.”

Tori later took to Instagram to explain the situation, “I was so blown away and angry that anyone could ask that but more so that production allowed the question in at all.”

“It is such a private and personal thing, and one we weren’t ready to talk about”, she added, saying she felt pressured into speaking about her pregnancy on the show.

“The pregnancy came as a shock to both James and I, so yes, I had been drinking beforehand as I didn’t know I was pregnant!”

She further clarified, “No guys, I don’t drink while pregnant.”

According to Australia’s 2016 National Drug Strategy Household Survey, 49 percent of women surveyed said they consumed alcohol before the knew they were pregnant, and one in four said they drank alcohol after they found out they were expecting.

Australia’s National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) says, “It is not yet known how much alcohol is safe to drink during pregnancy. However, it is known that the risk of damage to the baby increases the more a pregnant woman drinks and that binge drinking is especially harmful.

“Therefore, the NHMRC advises that the safest option for pregnant women is to abstain from drinking if they are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding.”

It should be noted that pregnancy is calculated from the first day of your last menstrual period, so it is assumed that conception doesn’t take place until the second or third weeks of pregnancy.

Unhappy with the way the dinner party segment was edited on the show, Tori said producers put wine on the table to take shots of them toasting, and she would then rinse her glass out with water.

“Have a look at my wine glass, the wine never goes down,” she said.
