A woman in China has given birth to a baby boy weighing 7.3 kilograms (16 pounds). The chubby newborn has been given the nickname Xiao Pang by medical staff, which means "Little Fat".

Xiao Pang is reportedly the heaviest baby to be born in China, with the previous record holder being a mere 7 kilograms (15.5 pounds).

As the UK's Daily Mail reports, the birth of Xiao Pang follows a trend known as Big Baby Syndrome, or macrosomia.

Worryingly, it is the world's developing nations that have been the biggest increases. With Algeria seeing a 15 per cent rise in over-sized newborns.

Oversized babies in China also make up nearly 7 per cent of all newborns.

Medical journal The Lancet reported last year that the number of large babies being born across the globe is on the rise with a 15 to 25 per cent increase in babies weighing over 5 kilograms in the past few decades.

It is not known why there has been such an increase, but doctors say it could be a result of poor diet in expectant mothers and rising rates of obesity.
