Week 18 of your Pregnancy

You

Around now, most pregnant women will have a routine morphology scan so that their doctor can check that baby is developing normally and that there won’t be any surprises at the birth (such as a low lying placenta or other problems). This is an exciting time as it’s often the only chance you’ll get to have a peek at your unborn baby. It’s a great opportunity for your partner to get involved too. Usually you will be able to take a photograph or even a video of your baby to show to your family and friends – and you’ll also get the chance to find out what gender your baby is, if you’ve decided to check it out in advance.

Baby

Your baby now measures 13-14cm long and weighs around 150 grams. He will now respond quite noticeably to loud noises – he may startle – and to bright lights (even though his eyelids remain closed). He is starting to build the connections between his muscles and his nerves, which are now being covered in their protective myelin sheath. And he might even have found his little thumb – and be sucking it!
