Is this the world's fattest baby?

Colombia's fattest baby, Santiago Mendoza weighed in at 21 kilograms when his mother reached out to a charity for help.

Eunice Fandiño, Santiago's mother, wrote to a charity called Chubby Hearts Foundation (Gorditos de Corazon) asking for help with treating her baby's obesity.

As the UK's Daily Mail reports, Ms Fandiño said that her son's excessive weight gain was a result of her own ignorance. She said that Santiago is an anxious baby and she would feed him whenever he cried because it was the only way she could calm him.

Volunteers from the charity have stepped in and flown the baby from his home in Colombia's north-east to a clinic in the capital, Bogota, so that he can undergo treatment for his obesity.

According to Colombia's Caravol Radio, the child has been hospitalised a number of times because of his obesity.

The baby will need long term treatment and a serious of operations to regain his health. Doctors warn that unless he receives the proper treatment now, he could suffer from complications such as high blood pressure, diabetes and joint problems in later life.

Ms Fandiño says she now optimistic about her son's future.
