On-trend baby names for 2012

Macy Gray has a ‘Happy’, Adam Sandler has a ‘Sunny’, and Forrest Whittaker has a ‘True’. English footballer Gabriel Zakuani and his fashion writer wife even went so far as to name their son ‘Trendy’, leading experts to suggest that 2012 will be the year of the adjective name.

According to baby name website nameberry.com, in the coming months, we can expect to see a spate of babies with monikers like Noble, Brave, Strong, Loyal and Loving, perhaps a reflection of the personality traits parents wish for their protégés.

Also trending strongly are so-called ‘hero’ names, names which convey strength and masculinity. Actress Alicia Silverstone is an early trend-setter, naming her son ‘Bear Blu’, as are Erykah Badu with baby ‘Puma’ and even a ‘Bandit’ for My Chemical Romance singer Gerard Way.

Other trends identified by nameberry.com include Western-themed names (think Colt, Wyatt and Maverick), names beginning with ‘A’, names beginning with ‘M’, vintage-inspired names ending in ‘ie’ (think Elsie and Maisie), and one-syllable ‘connective tissue’ middle names.

Stars to watch on the baby name front in 2012 include Jessica Simpson (due early-2012), Beyoncé (due February 2012), Bruce Willis and wife Emma Heming (due mid-2012), Jennifer Garner (due early-2012), and Hilary Duff (due early-2012).
