Malcolm Jenkins needs new deal to return to Eagles next year: ‘I’m not one to beg’

It will take a new contract to keep Malcolm Jenkins in a Philadelphia Eagles jersey next season.

Anything less than that, he said on Monday, will result in him finding a new home.

“I won’t be back on the same deal,” Jenkins said Monday, via ESPN. “That won’t happen.”

Jenkins recorded 80 total tackles this season for the Eagles, and has 2.5 sacks and four forced fumbles. The 32-year-old played in every single defensive snap this season, too, the fifth time he’s accomplished that feat in his six seasons in Philadelphia. He hasn’t missed a single game since joining the Eagles in 2014, either, and helped lead them to a Super Bowl win in 2017.

Jenkins is undoubtedly one of the biggest, most experienced leaders among the Eagles’ defense.

Yet the former Ohio State standout is set to enter the final year of his four-year, $35 million deal with Philadelphia next season, where he is due to make $7.6 million. And with other high-end safeties across the league earning significantly more than that in recent years — high-end safeties like Eddie Jackson, Kevin Byard, Landon Collins, Tyrann Mathieu, Earl Thomas and Reshad Jones all earn at least $12 million per season — it makes sense that Jenkins wants a new deal before going forward.

But throughout the season, and following their 17-9 playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, no significant progress on a new contract has been made.

That lack of movement, however, isn’t concerning for Jenkins. After the year he’s had, he said, he’s confident it will work itself out.

“I’m not one to beg,” Jenkins said, via ESPN. “I am a very prideful person, so I feel like what I put out there this year, what I put on tape, what I’ve given to this team is more than enough. I can’t do any more.

“So for me, I feel good about that, that it’ll be good enough for me to go into this offseason with certainty that I’ll be fine.”

With one year left on his contract, Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins made it clear that he needs a new deal to stay in Philadelphia in 2020.
