For a quick bit of context, SNL debuted back in 1975 on NBC. Fifty successful seasons later, the late-night sketch comedy show is still a huge hit, and features an array of acclaimed guest hosts and musical guests.

This week, a bunch of current and former SNL stars featured in a Vulture interview, during which they were asked to share their “biggest indulgences” after receiving their first SNL paycheck.

Pete Davidson, who first appeared on SNL in 2014, told the outlet, “Do you guys know what they pay us? It’s, like, three grand an episode. I think I got dinner.”

It’s unclear whether Pete was being totally accurate, though his remarks sparked some online discourse all the same. Several users were left raising their eyebrows at the comedian insinuating that $3,000 per episode wasn’t a lot, given that each season of SNL features roughly 20 episodes.

“3k is a lot for little people like us Pete,” someone quipped, while someone else asked Pete to “readjust” his “perspective.” They wrote, “You’re blessed, you’re privileged.”

However, other users argued that Pete’s reaction was totally valid. “It’s about 60k a year — not sure if he’s talking before or after taxes. In NYC, that’s peanuts unfortunately,” one comment read, while someone else pointed out that the cast likely had agents and managers to pay, too.

Elsewhere in the interview, current SNL cast member James Austin Johnson recalled buying furniture with his first check. “We bought the most uncomfortable West Elm couch of all time,” he said.

Former SNL star Seth Meyers also recalled, “I went to a Crate & Barrel, and I got a really big couch. And then I went to a Best Buy, and I got a really big TV.”

Similarly, Sarah Sherman and Cheri Oteri recalled purchasing a “nice mattress” and “a couch,” respectively, while Rachel Dratch noted that she spent her first paycheck on “an apartment.”

Jason Sudeikis also said, “I mean, you don’t make enough money to make big purchases, so I think New York rent was probably the biggest purchase I made after writing my first year on SNL.”

However, some of the other SNL cast members recalled splurging a little differently.

Sarah Silverman said, “I bought a cashmere sweater. It was like $300,” while Bowen Yang revealed he purchased a pair of designer Gucci shoes.

And Julia Louis-Dreyfus, whose late father was a billionaire, said she bought a pair of shoes that were out of her budget. “I’m going to tell you they were $75,” she said.
