Yahoo Lifestyle People Are Revealing The Baby Names They Tried To Talk Their Family And Friends Out Of, And Whoa
When you name a child, you must make a huge decision. Do you go with a classic, popular name that you know people will recognize? Or should you decide on a unique, distinctive name that will set your child apart from everyone else?
Regardless of what you decide on, you probably want to make sure the name is something your child will grow to love. After all, they have to live with the name for the rest of their life.
If you've ever wondered about the interesting names people decide for their children, you've come to the right place. Earlier this year, we asked the BuzzFeed Community about the unique baby names they've come across, and they didn't disappoint. Here are 19 of the most interesting ones we saw:
1."My niece wanted to name her daughter Myracle'honesty. That's the first name. I sent her texts for 6 months with hundreds of other names. I was not successful. She is now 14."
2."I was called pretentious for being against Odious, because it means... well Odious, and why would you name your kid that?"
3."I grew up with a Tequila. We called her Kilo. Not sure what was worse."
4."I knew some parents that named their kid 'Fancy Dan.' I will always wonder if he survived high school."
5."Worked a case once where they spelled the kids name Jhonethyn. So mean to do to a kid."
6."Once, when we were teenagers, my sister said she thought Calorie would be a pretty name for a girl (thinking of Valerie or Mallory), forgetting what the context of the word meant. I told her if she ever has kids and names them Calorie I would punch her."
7."One of my cousins was considering the name Austin for her firstborn. Fortunately, she remembered well before the child’s birth that their last name is Powers."
8."I've known female twins named Reagan and Kennedy (which are each fine, but as a pairing are weird!) and male twins named Emmanuel and Messiah (and acted like they thought they were!)."
9."I am not making this up. A girl in my high school was named VELVEETA. And if that wasn’t bad enough, she worked in our local grocery store as an afterschool job….. with the name tag! In the dairy section. (although I don’t think anyone really knows what Velveeta is made of, I think of her to this day)."
10."In a mom group I’m a part of on FB, a woman was talking about how she wanted to name her son ‘Simba.’ That alone is cringe, but her last name is Lyons. Yes, Simba Lyons. She posted trying to get us on her side for the name, and it did not go the way she hoped. LOL."
11."Had a coworker who wanted to give her daughter a name pronounced as Dee-ARE-ria, spelled Diaria. Thankfully, someone finally pointed out the kid would be called diarrhea her whole life, and she changed it."
12."Not me but my cousin had a friend that named her boys Alexander Megatron and Constantine Starscream. She tried to convince them to change their names, but the father was a huge Transformers fan."
13."I know someone named Poizyn. Pronounced 'poison.'"
14."My brother insisted they name their first son Chevy Nova or Earth Oak. Thank god my SIL vetoed the name choices and went with Gabriel instead."
15."Also I have friends from high school who named their son Gotham. The literal first name is Gotham. So if the kid needed anything, they could tell one another 'Gotham needs you.'" 🤦🏻♀️
16."My cousin and her partner are major Good Omens fans, and when their daughter was born they named her Anathema, after the character in the books. At first we weren't totally sure about it, but thankfully most people don't actually know what that word means, and assume it's just one of those rarer names."
17."I had a student named Terrestrial."
18."I was almost 'Sevyn.'"
19.And finally, "My daughter had a friend with the surname Bridge. Her first and middle names were Brook Lynn. Her sister was Golden Gate. Brook got married the day after she graduated high school."
