With a seventh installment of the Scream franchise underway, Dempsey confirmed he is in talks to reprise his role.
“I’m waiting on the script,” Dempsey said on the Today show.
Dempsey’s Mark survived Ghostface’s attacks in Scream 3, and in 2022’s Scream, it is revealed Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott has married and had three children with him.
“There has been a conversation about it,” he added. “I haven’t seen anything yet. So, we’ll see what happens.”
Dempsey recalled working with Campbell again on Grey’s Anatomy in Season 9, playing Derek Shepherd’s sister, Liz.
Al Roker asked Dempsey if he was open to returning to the Scream franchise, to which the actor said, “I mean, you know, it’s always good to have a job.”
Scream 7 is set to open on February 27, 2026, and Kevin Williamson and Neve Campbell will return to the franchise they started in 1996. Williamson created the franchise and will direct the seventh installment, with Guy Busick set to write the script.
Campbell appeared in the first five installments of the Scream franchise before walking away from Scream VI over feeling undervalued.
Producers were trying to move away from Campbell’s Sidney Prescott, but in November 2023, they fired new lead star Melissa Barrera over social media posts that were perceived as antisemitic. Shortly after, Barrera’s co-star Jenna Ortega dropped out of Scream VII and left the franchise in limbo.
With Barrera and Ortega out, producers looked back to continue Sidney Prescott’s story and offered Campbell a return to the franchise.
“We are going to follow Sidney,” Campbell told Entertainment Tonight. “They did pitch the concept to me, and it’s the reason that I jumped on board.”
She continued, “I love these movies, they are so much fun to be a part of, I’m so grateful for them, I could never have imagined being a part of a movie that would have lasted this many decades.”
