Parliament member’s cat interrupts committee meeting on Zoom

The world is working from home, so naturally, there’s a lot of Zoom shenanigans.

U.K. Parliament members are unfortunately not immune. The Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee held a virtual meeting in July to discuss public service broadcasting. This meant very little to Rojo, the fluffy ginger cat that interrupted his owner, Scottish National Party M.P. John Nicolson, on camera.

When Nicolson was chatting with Dame Carolyn McCall, the chief executive of ITV, Rojo decided to make an appearance. The M.P. wanted to know why children’s programming didn’t always have subtitles, a feature that was shown to improve literacy, but Rojo didn’t care. The cat’s big fluffy tail moved across the screen although the rest of his body was out of frame. Rojo lingered for quite sometime before Nicolson got fed up.

“Rojo, put your tail down,” he said swatting the curious cat away. [Editor’s note: The tweet below misidentified the cat’s name as Rocco.]

If you listen closely, you can hear a few committee members guffawing in the audio. Fortunately, any cat person knows some felines can’t resist the warmth of a computer.

A clip of the incident circulated on Twitter, amassing 190,000 views. Many people praised M.P. Nicolson for his professionalism.

“Absolutely fabulous. Nicolson carried on like a pro until that tail became too much!” one person tweeted.

“Love it. The joys of working from home. Got to love Rocco [sic],” another commented.

“Cats gonna cat,” someone said succinctly.
