Parents throw incredible gender reveal party for son: 'We got it wrong 17 years ago'

Break out the tissues, this is one gender reveal story that’s too important to not share.

Love Gwaltney shared a collage of photos on Facebook celebrating a recent gender reveal party she and her husband, Brandon, threw. While Love is pregnant, the party wasn’t for the new baby.

“We wanted to announce that we got it wrong 17 years ago when we told the world we were having a little girl,” Love wrote on Facebook. “We’d like to introduce you to our SON: Grey.”

The sweet post outlines how parents can get so wrapped up in “expected characteristics” based off of “biological sex,” that sometimes they can make mistakes and accidentally label a child the wrong identity. That’s why Love and Brandon made an effort to correct their mistake and announce that their 17-year-old goes by he/him or they/them pronouns.

“The colors of the balloons we chose for Grey match the Non-binary pride flag,” Love explained. “The cake layers are those that represent Transgender bodies, for those that are wondering.”

Photographer Sarah McBride captured the momentous day, which was filled with smiles from every member of the family. In terms of what the upcoming baby’s gender is, Love says in the Facebook post that we’ll all just have to wait.

The post has since gotten over 60,000 likes and 52,000 shares, with hundreds of thousands of positive and supportive comments. Love especially wanted to thank members of the trans community who reached out to her and thank her for what she and Brandon have done for Grey.

“I see all the messages I am getting from the trans community, and am trying my hardest to respond to them,” Love wrote. “I hate that so many of you in the trans community were not given the love and acceptance you all deserve. I see you. I hear you. I am your new mom now!”

“These photos moved me to tears!” someone posted in the comments. “What a wonderful family and what a strong and resilient son you’ve raised.”

“As the mama of a trans person, I love, love, love this!” another person wrote. “Isn’t it joyful to see your child fully realize themselves? Welcome to the world, Grey. So, so glad you are here!”

“I love how happy he looks!” a Facebook user left on one of the photos.
