The baby name trend that's dominating most popular picks

People are already treating their plants like babies so it was only a matter of time before green-fingered parents starting actually naming their new arrivals after their house plants.

A new study by Australian insights company, McCrindle, claims plant-based baby names will be a huge trend in 2019.

In fact, the floral name trend crept into the charts last year, with names like Willow, Poppy, Ivy and Lily all appearing in the top 100 baby names list for 2018.

Most popular names of 2019

It comes after the most popular baby names of 2019 in the UK so far have been revealed, and it seems new parents are throwing back to the Eighties.

Yep the decade that brought us shoulder pads and mullets is now having an influence on what we name our little ones.

The naming bods at parenting website BabyCentre have been busy analysing the baby register to find out what names new mums and dads have been choosing for their minis.

But before you wonder if a new generation of little Kevins will be running round the pre-school playground, the eighties-inspired monikers making a come-back are a little less divisive. (Sorry anyone named Kevin).

But it isn’t just the decade of back-combed hair and leg warmers that’s inspiring parents, it seems popular TV programmes like Game of Thrones are having an impact too.

Both Arya and Daenerys, appeared on the list (Spoiler - maybe before the latter burned down an entire city).

Many of the contestants on ITV's hit reality TV show Love Island have also provided name-inspiration for parents with Amber, Kem, Camilla, Kady, Cara, Nathan and Marcel all appearing on the list.

And of course royal fever may well have had an impact with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex naming their baby Archie, which has now the 18th most popular baby name.
