"Team Green" Gender Reveals Have Become A Viral Trend On Social Media, So I Talked To A Mom Who Did One To Understand

Expectant parents revealing the gender of their unborn baby in some way has become just as common as having a baby shower, or just having a baby in general.

Now, some expectant parents are joining "team green" and making announcements similar to gender reveals on social media. But instead of revealing pink or blue, the soon-to-be parents reveal the color green.

The term "team green" started popping up on mommy blogs and birthing websites a few years ago. The color green signifies that the parents will find out the gender of their baby when it's born.

In an interview with BuzzFeed, Kam said she filmed her "gender announcement" to let people know about her decision to wait. "With a platform as large as mine, and since many of my supporters have watched my love story bloom over the years, it felt natural to let them know how I approached this experience. I wanted to do it creatively so it would stick," she said.

<div> <p>"If I had just announced it with a photo and caption, people would still have asked me afterward. With the video, everyone tuned in expecting a gender reveal, but instead, I announced I was waiting to find out. After that post, no one kept asking what I was having."</p> </div><span> TikTok: @iamkamiam_ / Via <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@iamkamiam_/video/7295463571885002026?is_from_webapp=1&web_id=7384176209603233311" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:tiktok.com;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas" class="link ">tiktok.com</a></span>

Kam said she had always considered having a pregnancy where the baby's gender was a surprise, but she wasn't aware of the "team green" label until this pregnancy, which is her second.

Later on in the pregnancy, Kam shared a video explaining that a major hurdle she faced while trying to keep the baby's gender unknown was centered around visits with a medical specialist.

"So about our second time seeing the doctor/specialist, the tech lets her know, ‘Hey, you know, they’re 'team green,' they don’t want to know. She says like, ‘Well that’s not that important. What’s important is the results of whatever we’re looking for with your baby.’ I was really annoyed when she said that," Kam said.

"She does my scan and as she’s telling me the results, she says a pronoun about, like, three times…I didn’t call her out on it, I just kept my mouth shut," she said.

Kam didn't reveal what pronouns the specialist used in the video, but after her pregnancy she shared in a follow-up video that the specialist kept saying "he/him," which ultimately did not ruin the surprise when Kam gave birth to a baby girl.

"I don’t regret being 'team green' at all and would do it again... There’s no better way to trust the process."

<div> <p>"Your baby is already who they are going to be, and having a healthy baby is all that matters. Going through this process teaches you an important lesson in patience, one that you’ll continue to learn as a parent...I’ve never met anyone who regrets doing it."</p> </div><span> TikTok: @iamkamiam_ / Via <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@iamkamiam_/video/7295463571885002026?is_from_webapp=1&web_id=7384176209603233311" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" data-ylk="slk:tiktok.com;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas" class="link ">tiktok.com</a></span>

Based on her experience, Kam has two pieces of advice for expectant parents: "Make sure you have a provider who respects your 'team green' decision and takes it seriously. Pronouns are a big deal in today’s world, and the same respect should be extended to your unborn baby."

Taylor Minaberry, known as @thebirthprepcoach on TikTok, is a 30-year-old birth prep coach from Florida. She shared some advice with BuzzFeed for parents whose "team green" decision is being met with negativity. "I always encourage parents to really hold on to their 'why,' reminding themselves why they made this choice in the first place. Having that clarity makes it easier to confidently and calmly communicate with others," she said.

Ultimately, Minaberry, who has five kids and was "team green" for her fourth, reminds parents to lean in to all of the emotions that come with the experience. "Embrace it fully. Hold tight to that excitement, and know it’s going to make the birth moment that much more unforgettable," she said.

"It’s natural to feel a mix of emotions. Some days you might love the mystery, and other days you might feel like you’re missing a connection. When that happens, try focusing on the bigger picture of your birth journey. It’s a special experience that’s all your own, and staying in the moment can make it feel even more meaningful."
