Parasite has won best picture at the 92nd Academy Awards, becoming the first foreign-language film in history to take out the top gong.

In yet another surprising twist from the awards show that brought Eminem out as a surprise guest, Beating out far and away favourite war epic 1917, Parasite took out the two top prizes of the evening, best picture and best director, in a history-making moment that had the whole room on their feet.

A South Korean film from director Bong Joon-ho, Parasite is a wholly original ride that skates between psychological thriller and comedic social commentary.

The film took out four awards out of six nominations, including best picture, best director, best foreign film and best original screenplay.

Also nominated for the production design and editing awards, the shocked crew took to the stage to accept the award from presenter Jane Fonda.

A heartwarming acceptance speech in both Korean and English was shared between the ensemble.

“I feel like a very opportune moment in history is happening right now,” one of the film’s producers said via a translator.

“I express my deepest gratitude and respect for all the members of the Academy for making this decision.”

Fans gobsmacked at dark horse Oscar win

Onlookers have been left gobsmacked at the turn of events after films like war epic 1917, and psychological thriller Joker were tipped to win, with most flooding social media with delight at the dark horse taking out the competition.

History-making moment

The last film to come close to the film’s groundbreaking win was 2019’s Roma, which was nominated for best picture, but missed out, coming away with best director and best foreign film and others.

The film is racking up accolades at breakneck speed, having picked up the Palme D’Or at Cannes last year, and nabbing best foreign film at the Golden Globes.

Parasite is only the twelfth foreign film ever nominated in the best picture category as the award show nears it’s centenary.
