“Outer Banks” to end with season 5: 'It will be our best yet'

Bring it on home, John B — one last time.

Prepare yourselves, Pogues, because the treasure hunt will finally come to an end.

Outer Banks was renewed for season 5, which will officially be the last season. Netflix announced the news on Monday, just days before season 4 part 2's premiere on Thursday.

Co-creators and executive producers Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke shared a joint statement in which they reflected on the past seven years of making the fan-favorite series centered on BFFs John B (Chase Stokes)Sarah (Madelyn Cline)Kiara (Madison Bailey)JJ (Rudy Pankow)Pope (Jonathan Daviss), and Cleo (Carlacia Grant), and they also promised that the final season will be their best yet.

"In the summer of 2017, we came across a photo of teenagers on a beach at dusk during a power outage. That photo sparked an idea for a story of four best friends who only want to have a good time all the time," their statement reads. "From this beginning, we imagined a mystery that would lead to a five-season journey of adventure, treasure hunting, and friendship."

They add that, at the time, "it seemed impossible that we would really get to tell the whole five season story, but here we are, at the end of our fourth season, still chopping away. The fourth season was our longest and hardest — but most rewarding — to produce. The season ends with a feature length episode, which we think is our best, most powerful episode. We hope you feel the same way."

The fifth and final season is currently being written, and details will be shared at a later date.

After the first season debuted in April 2020, Jonas told Entertainment Weekly that they "always viewed it as something that was probably like a four-season, maybe five-season show, but definitely four seasons."

"We've sort of long-arced it out pretty far," the showrunner said at the time. "I'm just hoping that we get a chance to actually tell those stories."

However, ahead of season 3's premiere, his twin brother Josh revealed they threw out their (treasure) map and were no longer adhering to their original plan of having it run for only four or five seasons. After joking that he wanted to see the show go on for 17 seasons, he then got serious: "I don't know if I could put a real number on it right now — how long it takes to get to that ending might expand, but we now know the shape of the end of the story. We're going to take it as long as we can, for sure."

Looks like they got back on course since then.

Outer Banks season 4, part 2 premieres Thursday, Nov. 7, on Netflix.
