With 2023 coming to a close, our attention starts to turn to awards season with the 96th Academy Awards once again acting as the shining jewel in Hollywood’s annual movie calendar.

2024’s Oscars will no doubt be a hotbed of viral moments and movie discussion — and not just because of the new-release films they’ll be celebrating.

After last year’s now-infamous evening which saw Will Smith attack comedian Chris Rock shortly before accepting the Best Actor Oscar, all eyes will no doubt be on the Academy to see just how the institution has changed in the wake of this disappointing and game-changing moment.

Details of the 2024 Academy Awards were confirmed back in April, with next year’s ceremony due to take place on Sunday, 10 March at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

For the past three years, Oscar night has taken place in March instead of February when they were typically held. This year continues that trend, something that has reportedly given way to higher viewing numbers on the night.

UK viewers can watch the action play out from the Oscars’ new home of ITV.

The full show will be broadcast exclusively on ITV1 and streamer ITVX, with exact viewing times available closer to the actual event.

Before this, the Oscars could be found on Sky Cinema but this partnership came to an end after 20 years of live coverage of the evening’s action.

2024 will mark the first time that ITV has hosted the Academy Awards.

Who will host the 2024 Oscars?

Hosting the Oscars has always been a tricky and frequently thankless task, with some taking to it like it’s a role they were forever destined to play and others forced to endure seemingly neverending media scrutiny.

Last year, it was American late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel on hosting duty having returned to his Oscar tux after fronting the event twice before in 2017 and 2018.

Other notable names to have hosted the awards include Chris Rock, David Letterman, Steve Martin, Jon Stewart and Billy Crystal, the latter of whom is widely regarded as one of the best to ever do it.

As it stands, it’s currently unclear who will be hosting 2024’s event, but after the chaotic scenes witnessed during 2023’s awards, it’ll have to be someone the Academy is convinced can handle anything — slaps and all.

Nominations for next year’s Oscars will be unveiled on Tuesday, 23 January, 2024.

It’s here where we’ll get our first look at the movies, actors, directors and filmmaking talent who are up for awards on the big night. Final voting will close on Tuesday, 27 February just a few days before the 96th Academy Awards takes place.

As for what might emerge as ones-to-watch, early chatter suggests Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, Bradley Cooper’s Maestro and Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things could be destined for greatness.

However, at this stage, it really is anyone’s game. Could Ryan Gosling’s Ken’s next role simply be ‘Awards’ after his much-talked-about turn in 2023 megahit Barbie? Only time will tell.

The 96th Academy Awards will take place on Sunday, 10 March 2024.
