These optical illusions will make you second guess your eyes

If you thought you could trust everything you see with your eyes – think again.

While our brains are programmed to organise and make sense of what we see around us, our eyes can often play tricks on us.

This is because colours, patterns and shapes can ‘trick’ the brain into seeing things that aren’t necessarily there.

To highlight this, Lenstore has created 11 optical illusions that might have you questioning whether you should believe your eyes or not.

Check out each illusion above and see if you can figure them out.

If you struggled with that as much as we did, never fear. There is a simple explanation and we’re definitely not alone.

According to a study by Carnegie Mellon University, the ‘tricks’ we believe our eyes to be playing are not tricks at all, but simply the brain reacting to feedback between neurons in different parts of the visual system, therefore creating an illusion.

Illusions are also greatly impacted by colour, for example, changing the background or lighting is one of the most commonly used techniques in optical illusions, whilst the use of contrasting colours can even give the illusion of motion.

Further studies argue that women are better at solving optical illusions than men due to colour blindness. Men have a colour blindness rate of approximately 8 per cent in comparison to women at 3 per cent.
