The One Thing Women Over 50 Should Do Every Day, According to Therapist Nedra Glover Tawwab

Our days are filled with various deadlines, interactions with different personality types, errands to run and other unique challenges that range from having difficult conversations to sitting in traffic. For some of us, it can be taxing to try to stay happy and upbeat in the midst of the chaos of the day-to-day. But for therapist Nedra Glover Tawwab, happiness is not necessarily the end goal.

"While many people pursue happiness, my journey has been about seeking peace, which involves acceptance, managing change, and being present with whatever feelings arise," Tawwab tells Parade.

This refreshing perspective clearly resonates with her 1.8M followers on Instagram and readers of her "Nedra Nuggets" newsletter. And now, the two-time NYT bestselling author, licensed therapist and relationship expert is sharing more about this specific peace-seeking journey in Consider This: Reflections for Finding Peace, her latest book that released in October.

Parade recently spoke with Tawwab all about the best habits for pursuing peace, as well as the one thing women over 50 should do every single day.

The One Thing Women Over 50 Should Do Every Day, According to Therapist Nedra Glover Tawwab

"Incorporate a wellness routine that you can engage in every day," Tawwab tells Parade. "It does not have to require a lot of time. The practice could include yoga, meditation, intentional breathing or even a deep belly laugh. Choose something you can practice intentionally every single day."

Tawwab stresses that this wellness routine does not need to be complicated—but it does need to be consistent.

She explains, "The simpler the practice, the easier it will be to make it a routine. Take good care of yourself."

Habits for Pursuing Peace

In Consider This: Reflections for Finding Peace, Tawwab writes, "My life changed when I started pursuing peace."

Elaborating on this sentiment, she tells Parade, "When peace is my main focus, pursuing it involves seeking and maintaining reciprocal relationships, centering my joy, recognizing chaos, and establishing boundaries in challenging situations. It also means noticing when things are misaligned with my values."

Women of all ages should be pursuing peace in their lives, and Tawwab has some suggestions on how to begin this important journey.

"Discover who you are, embrace your true self, and connect with others through authenticity," Tawwab says. "Engage in self-work, knowing when to focus and when to pause."

And when it comes to her own mental health, she swears by something specific.

"Therapy has been an immense support," she reveals. "Having a safe space and a guiding person through life's ups and downs has been transformative and stabilizing."

After setting her mind to the pursuit of peace, Tawwab couldn't help but notice its impact. "I started making healthier choices in my relationships, articulating my needs, and embracing self-discovery," she tells Parade.

Clearly, we could all benefit from this pursuit!
