This political party has voters doing a double take
Voters have been studying their ballot papers wisely this election day, and there’s one unusual party that is drawing people’s attention.
The Pirate Party was ironically option ‘r’ on this year’s senate ballot and people have been noticing.
Taking to Twitter people are loving the group’s existence, placement and general vibe in an election dogged by controversy.
There were those loving the strategic, or accidental, placement of the group as option ‘R’.
“Aus politics is wilder than fiction so of course the Pirate Party were in box R,” wrote one voter.
Would the ‘Pirate Party’ be concerned about our voting system using numbers? Surely they’d prefer the use of letters to record any votes for them...... like Rrrrrrrrr. #auspol #auspol2019

The Pirate Party in #AusVotes2019 today drew Column R (Arrrr) in the Senate ballot paper for Victoria. They must be happy with that.

Others were confused by who this party even was.
Me when I saw “Pirate party” on the ballot paper 😂. I had to google it when I left pic.twitter.com/yKQjXPIqkj

Not to mention, some hilarious speculation around potential policies they might have in store.
I sure hope The Pirate Party makes it mandatory for all Australians to wear eye patches.

Me too, Inferno_V, me too.
The reality, however, is a little lest swashbuckling than many might think.
The Pirate Party are a serious venture, actually hoping to make some change.
While they sound like they might be about parrots, ships and eye-patches, the party actually takes a serious stance on digital activism and human rights.
The party’s values are centered around “freedom of information and culture, civil and digital liberties, privacy and anonymity, government transparency and participatory democracy”, according to their website.
