This Is The “One And Only Time” The “Sex And The City” Cast Were Allowed To Ad-Lib Their Lines — And The Reason Why Is Kind Of Wholesome
In case you missed it, Sex and the City star Kristin Davis launched a brand new podcast earlier this month called Are You a Charlotte? — a tribute to her iconic HBO character Charlotte York.
The star has wasted no time in sharing some secrets from her time on the hit show, which premiered in 1998 and ran until 2004.
In the very first episode of the pod, Kristin revealed that her role was nearly reduced to a “recurring character” instead of being a core part of the now-infamous foursome, led by — of course — Sarah Jessica Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw.
And on Monday, animal lover Kristin recalled begging Sex and the City’s costume designer not to make her wear fur in the series.
She also said that her feet would be left so swollen from shooting in high heels all week that she had a special pair of shoes that were one size too big to wear on weekends.
In the same episode, Kristin also opened up about the “one and only time” that she and her castmates were allowed to ad-lib during filming — and shared the wholesome reason why.
The moment actually happened in the show’s second-ever episode, “Models and Mortals,” which follows Carrie as she explores the concept of “modelizers,” aka men who only have sex with models.
In the scene, Carrie and Charlotte discuss their physical insecurities with Samantha Jones and Miranda Hobbes, played by Kim Cattrall and Cynthia Nixon, respectively.
“I hate my thighs,” Charlotte begins. “I can’t even open a magazine without thinking: ‘Thighs, thighs, thighs.'”

“Well, I’ll take your thighs and raise you a chin,” Miranda counters.
“Well, I’ll take your chin and raise you a—” Carrie then replies, gesturing at her nose.

Samantha, meanwhile, remains candid, refusing to say anything negative about herself. She then says to her confused friends: “What? I happen to love the way I look!”
“You should; you paid enough for it,” Miranda quips.
Speaking on her podcast, Kristin revealed that writers did not script this scene as they did not want to predict what each woman’s insecurity would, or should, be.
“It’s the one and only time that we were told we could ad-lib,” she began. “After that, it never happened again; it was very, very frowned upon after this. But it was the sweetest reason why!"
“In this particular scene, we’re talking about models and men who only date women who are models,” Kristin went on. “And, you know, how we feel about that. Does it make us feel less than? I think that’s something Carrie asks us, and then we were each supposed to say what we felt insecure about.”
“The writers didn’t want to write that on paper,” she explained. “That was very sweet of them not to want to write what they thought we would feel self-conscious about. To let us ad-lib what we felt self-conscious about, it was really kind.”
Well, it’s safe to say that the writers made the right call with this one — let me know what you make of it all in the comments!
