Yahoo Lifestyle North Carolina's Anthony Harris out for season with torn ACL
Roy Williams’ struggling North Carolina team has suffered yet another injury setback.
Freshman guard Anthony Harris suffered a torn ACL in his right knee during the Tar Heels’ 70-67 win against Yale on Monday, the school announced on Friday. It marks the second ACL injury Harris has suffered in nearly a year, as he tore his left ACL in high school in December 2018.
He will miss the rest of the season.
“This is one of the most heartbreaking injuries one of my teams has ever dealt with,” Williams said in a statement, via ESPN. “Anthony is such a great kid and his teammates and coaches have all seen the countless hours he put in to come back from the knee injury he suffered in high school. The impact on our locker room after the Yale game was devastating. Everyone associated with our program hurts for Anthony and his family. But we will rally around him and support him every step of the way. I know he will work unbelievably hard to get back on the floor.”
Harris — a four-star Rivals.com recruit — has averaged 6.8 points and one rebound per game in just five games, as he missed their first eight games of the season recovering from the first ACL injury. He did have a career-high 14 points in North Carolina’s 74-64 win against UCLA on Saturday.
Harris’ injury is just another blow for Williams’ team so far this season, the most notable of which was star guard Cole Anthony’s arthroscopic knee surgery last month. He is expected to miss at least another two weeks. Leaky Black, Andrew Platek and Brandon Robinson have all also missed games while injured this year.
The Tar Heels have dropped a number of key games, too, and suffered a blowout loss to No. 5 Ohio State last month. They fell to No. 19 Virginia, No. 1 Gonzaga, No. 12 Michigan and unranked Wofford, causing them to drop out of the rankings for the first time since 2014.
