Epic way New Orleans celebrated Mardi Gras in 2021

Mardi Gras in New Orleans is world famous but looked a little different this year.

Typically you'd see large celebrations and one parade rolling after another, featuring elaborate floats and revellers dancing through the streets.

This year, however, things had to be a little different due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and social distancing requirements.

So while parades and large events weren't possible, it didn't mean Mardi Gras in New Orleans was cancelled.

Instead, locals transformed the front of their houses into floats as part of an initiative by the Krewe of House Floats.

Members in neighbourhoods all across the city helped create an opportunity for spectators to drive by following their own 'parade route' and remain safe from others.

All up over 3,000 houses particpated, including some expats from as far away as Perth, right here in Australia.
