Princess Charlotte to be honoured with commemorative coin

Princess Charlotte’s christening this coming weekend is to be honoured with a specially-designed coin.

The UK’s Royal Mint, which produces all the country’s currency, has now revealed what the five pound coin - worth around $10 - will look like.

It has been designed by master engraver John Bergdahl who also designed a coin for Prince George’s christening.

The coin features cherubs and says “To celebrate the christening of Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana of Cambridge 2015”.

A spokesman for The Royal Mint said: “These coins will be a fitting addition to The Royal Mint's long tradition of creating works of art to celebrate landmark events in the history of the Royal family.

“It is entirely appropriate that we commemorate this significant occasion with the release of a special coin, just as we celebrated the christening of Prince George.”

An inspiration for the design was reportedly the christenings of Queen Victoria’s children more than 100 years ago.

It will also be available in silver and gold. In the UK, a baby is given a silver coin to bring the youngster good fortune.

The christening will take place at St. Mary Magdalene Church at Queen Elizabeth II's Sandringham estate in Norfolk, and it will be photographed by Princess Diana’s favourite photographer, Mario Testino.
