Meanwhile, the couple - who also have 21-month-old Prince George - have said they are "hugely grateful" for the outpouring of love for their family following the arrival of the as-yet unnamed tot at 8.34am yesterday.

A statement on Kensington Palace's official Twitter account read: "The Duke and Duchess are hugely grateful for the messages of congratulations they have received from people all over the world. It means a great deal to them that so many people have celebrated the arrival of their new daughter."

The statement also confirmed that Prince Charles, the Duchess of Cornwall and Carole, Michael and Pippa Middleton had all visited the family the day after the birth.

Exiting the Lindo Wing at St Mary's Hospital in West London yesterday, Prince William, 32, told the press he was "very happy" about becoming a father to the baby princess, who is fourth in line to the throne.

Alongside Prince Harry, Queen Elizabeth II has yet to meet the new princess as she is currently on a royal engagement.
