Catherine Freeman: ‘I’m having a baby!’

Eleven years after winning the gold medal at Sydney’s 2000 Olympic Games, Catherine Freeman, confirms in an exclusive interview with New Idea that she’s pregnant with her first baby.

‘I am so totally lost in love with this baby already,’ she reveals. ‘I think it will take my breath away when we first meet.’

The unmistakable glow of pregnancy is obvious and she is excited to chat about the day she and husband James Murch discovered their good news, after a home pregnancy test.

But with the Olympic legend’s happy news also comes a sobering diagnosis, as Catherine’s pregnancy has triggered type 2 diabetes, a disease that runs in the Freeman family.

Though she is aware of the possible dangers that come with being a diabetic mother, Cathy is being positive and concentrating on taking care of herself and her baby bringing her champion skills to the fore.
