The 51-year-old Les Miserables star split from his wife in 2012 and blames his failed relationship on buying Australian rugby team South Sydney Rabbitohs in 2006.

Speaking of the business venture, the New Zealand native told CBS Sunday Morning: "It's not a bad business decision at all. But it's taken a lot of work, and it's probably cost me a marriage.

"It took a lot of work, and I already had an extremely busy schedule."

Since purchasing the team nine years ago, Russell has turned their fortunes around significantly, and they even won the National Rugby League championship in October last year.

On top of balancing his business venture and relationship, the Man of Steel actor also had to juggle his full-time acting career.

He explained: "Making a film is my job. My wife clearly understands what my job is. But to her, I suppose, the football situation was needlessly taking myself away."

Russell and Danielle, 49, met more than 20 years ago on the set of 1990 drama The Crossing and despite splitting in 2012, they are still legally married. They have two sons together, Charles, 11, and Tennyson, eight.

He said: "Technically we're married. We are separated and discussing what that means."
