John Lennon's first wife dies of cancer at 75

Cynthia, who was married to the musician from 1962-1968, passed away at her home in Mallorca Spain on Wednesday after battling the disease.

The news was announced on the website and Twitter account of her son, Julian, and later confirmed by his representative.


Julian, 51, about whom the song Hey Jude was written, posted on his website: "Cynthia Lennon passed away today at her home in Mallorca, Spain following a short but brave battle with cancer."

A statement from the representative added: "Her son Julian Lennon was at her bedside throughout. The family are thankful for your prayers. Please respect their privacy at this difficult time."

Cynthia and John met while attending Liverpool College of Art and wed in 1962. She gave birth to the couple's only child, Julian, a year later.

Following the couple's divorce in 1968, the musician went on to wed Yoko Ono, whom he remained married to until he was murdered in 1980.
