Newlyweds Kieren and Karen Perkins weren’t expecting to stop the traffic as they strolled down Positano’s steep and winding streets to the sunlit Mediterranean Sea.
But the Olympic legend and his beautiful bride hadn’t counted on Italy’s innate sense of romance, which turned their very low-key nuptials into a noisy public celebration.
"You’ve gotta love it," laughs Kieren, who took the plunge on the glorious Amalfi Coast a month ago.
"There was spontaneous applause when we walked through the township for our wedding photos on the beach! Other couples rushed up to congratulate us, and all the tour buses were honking as we passed."

It wasn't quite what the laid-back couple envisaged when they planned to tie the knot without any hoopla, somewhere beautiful far from their Brisbane home.
The only other proviso was that it must be a place the avid travellers had never been to before.
"We felt that as it was the second time around for both of us, there was no need to make it a big palaver," explains the father-of-three and former swim superstar.
"It was really about doing something special for us that cemented our relationship, making new memories together."
