Lynne McGranger: My secret battle

Lynne McGranger opens up about her secret battle in this week's New Idea, on sale now.

Like most women, Lynne McGranger knows how hard it is to lose weight. She jokes that she need to only look at food to feel the kilos creep on.

But it’s not just her sweet tooth that’s to blame. There is a medical reason too, and the bubbly actress has been battling the secret condition behind the scenes on Dancing with the Stars.

"Darling, I’m on medication for an overactive thyroid, which slows down any weight loss," reveals the 61-year-old Home and Away favourite.

"But being on Dancing with the Stars is like a 10-week bootcamp, so my pants are falling off me!"

It’s the first time she’s spoken openly about her hyperthyroidism, a disorder that speeds up the metabolism with potentially disastrous consequences.

"I thought something must be wrong when I got very anxious and a bit shaky – which, as I discovered, are two symptoms of an overactive thyroid," says Home and Away’s longest-serving female cast member.

"I’ve been taking the medication for more than a year now and it just slows me down a bit. The only problem is that where weight used to fall off me, it’s become much harder to shift."
