How to master budge-proof eye makeup

If you are always on the go, don't let your makeup suffer.

There’s nothing worse than creased lids, flaky mascara and panda eyes to make you look worn-out and disheveled. But there are some simple workarounds to this makeup fail that go beyond waterproof mascara.

1. Prepare the base
Firstly, get your base right. While suitable for skin an every-day BB crème or foundation isn’t an effective choice to prep your eyelids. Instead, invest in a n eye primer which help set makeup for the long haul. “Eye primers are an essential for long-wearing eye make up,” advises Lucy Adams, marie claire Australia’s Beauty Editor. “They prepare the surface for eye shadow and liner application, keeping makeup in place and crease free.”

Makeup artist Melanie Burnicle agrees and won’t start any look without it. “Prior to applying eye shadow, dab some primer where needed on and around the eye. It works by smoothing the skin to stop makeup bleeding into any fine lines. A product with brightener will also lift out darkness,” she says.

2. Maximise the base
Apply a light under-eye concealer on top of your primer to boost its stay-put power. “This will have the prep totally under control and give you the best outcome for keeping the skin around your eyes bright and fresh all day,” Burnicle explains.

3. Eye shadow
Without a primer, it’s wise to for eye makeup that’s designed to go the distance. Eye shadow powders or gels tend to last longer than creamy formulas which can crease and melt into the skin. For maximum impact look for long wearing formulas in this season’s light greys and grapey tones.

4. Eye liner
For a smudge-proof finish, line the lash line with a liquid or gel eyeliner. To recreate a classic cat-eye, Burnicle recommends applying a skinny liquid liner to perfect a sharp feline flick. Finish by lining the inside rim of your eye.

5. Mascara
To make the look last beyond breakfast a waterproof mascara is a must. Use an eyelash curler to set and open eyes and apply two coats, top and bottom. Top tip to remember: “I find waterproof mascara can take a little more time to set, so make sure it’s dry before you run out the door!” warns Burnicle.
