Princess Mary: My little Prince is five!

The cheeky Prince loves spending time with his three-year-old sister, Princess Isabella.

With the arrival of his twin siblings growing closer by the day, royal cutie Prince Christian of Denmark made the most of his time in the limelight on his fifth birthday.

His doting mum, Princess Mary, and proud dad, Prince Frederik, cleared their busy schedule to celebrate with their beloved little livewire on October 15. But first came the formalities – the future King Christian XI had to pose for his official birthday portrait.

The pint-sized prince turned on the charm for one of Mary and Fred’s favourite photographers, Franne Voigt, flashing his trademark grin as he dashed around the family’s newly renovated home, the Frederik VIII Palace in Copenhagen. There wasn’t a hint of a reprimand as he slid down a banister and later climbed onto a chair, with his little sister Isabella, three, following his lead.

While the photoshoot was fun, Christian has already begun his training in other official duties. Danish magazine Billed Bladet reports that he is ‘sociable, inquisitive and charming’ when out in public with his parents, shaking hands courteously when he meets Danish media. He’s even mastered the tricky formal royal wave to greet his future subjects.

The birthday boy cast aside the formalities when the royal family gathered at their autumn residence, Fredensborg Palace, for his big day. Rugged up against the chilly weather, Christian and his playmates were seen running around the grounds under the watchful eye of mum Mary.

The Aussie-born princess is due to give birth in January. She recently admitted to being ‘a little tired from time to time’, but is still keeping up her calendar of official commitments.

At a recent function the glowing princess told well-wishers that Christian and Isabella were curious about mum’s growing bump.
‘Little by little, they are getting more and more interested,’ Mary says.
‘Right now, they just call them “the babies”.’
