Real-life read: My miracle son will never know his mum


Sleeping peacefully in his father’s arms, miracle baby Caleb Stirling is blissfully unaware of the tragedy, heartbreak and trauma surrounding his birth.

Five weeks after the high-speed Hobart car smash that killed his mum and left him struggling for life in her womb, little Caleb is out of hospital and safely home at last.

Delivered eight weeks early by emergency caesarean, it took doctors 25 minutes to get the tiny battler breathing on his own.

Emotions are bittersweet for his dad Daniel, who’s grieving the loss of his adored partner Sarah Paino, 24, while struggling to cope as a newly single dad.

‘I’m not in denial that she’s gone... I know she’s not coming back but, yeah, I find it very hard day by day at the moment,’ a sobbing Daniel told Sunday Night’s Melissa Doyle.

It was 1am on January 22, and Sarah had just dropped Daniel off at work when her car was allegedly struck by a stolen SUV driven by joyriding teenagers.

Following the accident, rescue workers fought to drag the young mother from the mangled wreckage.

It was too late to save Sarah, but there was still hope for her unborn baby – if they could only get them both to hospital in time.

‘This baby is just completely and utterly a miracle baby,’ says Dr Kate Field, an emergency specialist at Royal Hobart Hospital.

Meanwhile, Caleb's father is grateful that his son was even born.

‘I just thank my lucky stars that Caleb’s here,' says Daniel.
